Prof. Colvin´s Group Homepage at Rice University
Description: The projects in this group all involve the control and understanding of material properties on nanometer length scales. Some of us develop new chemical approaches to forming uniform nanocrystals, and highly ordered porous solids. Others focus on using these materials as tools for answering fundamental questions about nature, such as the characteristic length scales in glasses and liquids. Finally, all of our materials research may impact emerging technologies in areas as diverse as bioinformatics and photonics. We are commited to exploring these exciting directions, and identifying the underlying scientific issues which will be central to their eventual success.

Prof. Liz-Marzan´s Group at the University of Vigo, Spain
Description: Our research is basically focussed on the synthesis, characterization and applications of nanoparticles and assemblies thereof. Core-shell nanoparticles are our favourite systems, so that we can control the properties of the colloid by means of careful modification of the dimensions of the core-shell geometry and of the nature of both the core and the shell. By chosing an insulating material as the shell, we can build up nanostructures, both in 2D and 3D, where the spacing between neighboring particles is determined by the thickness of the shell. Such a lattice control permits us to tailor the properties of the nanostructures. We search for applications mainly on magnetic and optical properties.

Electron Microscopy Site ETH Zurich
Description: Since the first transmission electron microscope was built in 1931, much progress has been made in improving instruments and methods for exploring the micro and the nano world. Today, electron microscopy comprises a wide range of different methods that use the various signals arising from the interaction of the electron beam with the sample to obtain information about structure, morphology and composition. The goal of these pages is to introduce the basics of most methods, without giving much of the theory and mathematics behind it. Thus, reading these sites can in no way substitute the study of textbooks.
